Concrete Pool Deck Resurfacing
This article go over the best pool deck coating options, color options, and how much pool deck resurfacing will cost. If you're getting tired of the look of your old pool deck and want something new without spending too much money, then resurfacing it is the best option.  The overlay is a thin layer of cement, sand, polymer resins, and other additives to repair and update concrete surfaces.  There is no need to tear down or pour new concrete but the end result is a like new finish.

WHAT IS THE BEST POOL DECK COATING?
These are the options for resurfacing your pool deck:
  • Concrete pool deck paint: This option is inexpensive and is easy to apply but that also means that it will need to be reapplied every year.  This must be considered in the additional maintenance cost in the long term.
  • Spray texture overlay: This option provides a texture that is perfect in barefoot areas. There are many ways to customize this with custom colors, scorelines, and aggregate effects. This is sometimes also referred to as a cool deck or knockdown finish.
  • Stamped concrete overlay: A stamped overlay is a way to repair and add a decorative component that looks like brick, stone, or even wood.  Although this is more expensive, compared to a new concrete pour, it is a more cost-effective option.
Current overlay products on the market blend resins with sand, cement and other additives to improve performance, appearance, slip resistance and the ability to bond to the existing concrete.  Some coating systems resist damage from salt, pool chemicals, UV exposure, freeze-thaw conditions, and abrasion.

WHAT  CUSTOM COLORS ARE AVAILABLE?
One of the best things about resurfacing is that it allows you to personalize your pool deck. Popular colors for pool decks include shades of brown, tan or gray that blend well with the natural surroundings. The myriad of color choices means you can make it uniquely yours and as bold as you want.  These are some of the coloring options:

  • Integral coloring is mixed into the material which makes it a great base because the color is consistent all the way through.
  • Color hardeners are a dry shake powder applied to the surface of the concrete, usually before stamping.  They provide a bit more intense color palette, and improve the surface strength.
  • Surface-applied color are stains, dyes and tinted release agents that can be used in conjunction with the first two options. The colors applied to the surface create variations that help make textures look more like the natural materials they resemble.

WHAT  IS THE COST TO RESURFACE A POOL DECK?
Resurfacing your pool deck will be more economical than having it demolished with a new pour. Basic pool deck resurfacing costs $3-$5 per square foot, as opposed to $6-$10 per sq ft to pour a new surface before customization and any decorative options are accounted for.  It might seem an easy job, but it is highly recommended that you find a knowledgeable and experienced contractor to make sure the project is done correctly.

HOW DO YOU RESURFACE A POOL DECK?
Concrete overlays can be trowel applied or sprayed on to most sound concrete surfaces. Some systems can also be stamped or stenciled to achieve the same patterns possible with new concrete.
Here are the steps you can expect when your contractor is resurfacing your pool deck:
  1. Prepare - the surface might be ground or treated with chemicals
  2. Clean - any dust or debris will be removed with a broom and hose or pressure washer
  3. Mix - the overlay product will be mixed, along with any integral colors
  4. Apply - the material is sprayed or troweled on, and decorative treatments are added
  5. Seal - once cured, a sealer will be applied to make your pool deck last for years

My old concrete deck has been looking pretty rough. It makes sense that resurfacing it would be really beneficial! I'll be sure to work with a professional to ensure that this gets handled correctly.

I love your tip about abrasive textures. That is pretty interesting considering you don't want to be without a pool when the heat hits. I'll have to consider your tips so that I can get a pool deck.

Slabjacking is an excellent approach to lift the slab back to its original position to create a level, solid surface if you find your concrete driveway sinking in some locations. This is done by deliberately drilling many small holes around the damaged regions and filling the voids beneath the concrete slab with polyurethane foam or a cement grout combination. The holes are filled with new concrete and the cracks are caulked once the surface has been returned to its original location. You'll have to wait a few hours before driving on the new pavement, but you can begin walking on it immediately.

Thanks for sharing that painting my deck is inexpensive. That could make my deck look different enough. Perhaps I can get a professional to paint it so it looks even better.

My favorite part of this article is the importance of having safety precautions to avoid accidents. I remember when my uncle mentioned to me last night that he is planning to have a rubber pool deck installed in their pool for a safe family pool experience and asked if I have any idea what is the best option to do. I appreciate you helping me learn more and I'll be sure to tell him that he can consult trusted pool deck services as they can answer all his inquiries.

There are many benefits to resurfacing your concrete pool deck. A fresh coat of resurfacing will make your pool deck look new again and will also protect it from the elements. Resurfacing will also make your pool deck more slip-resistant, which is important for safety. If you have an older pool deck, resurfacing is also a great way to make it look like new again.
